  3. Think – Pair - Share • What ARE the different classes of Japanese society? • Which classes are part of the ruling class? • Which class is highly respected but pays most of the taxes? • Which class was wealthy but not respected in society?

Feudalism:A political, economic, and social system based on loyalty, the holding of land, and military service.Feudal society is a military society—most of the focus in society is on providing for military warlords and their warriors. Figurehead:A leader in name only--who does not have any real power. • The Emperor paid nobles for their services by giving them land. • Noble families took total control of their large territories. Eventually, this made the families more wealthy and powerful than the Emperor was. • Even though he was still respected and still called the Emperor, the real power was in the hands of these landholding nobles (later on, the ruler of these families is called a Daimyo).

Today’s Standards and Objectives: • Objective: Analyze the structure and effects of the Feudal System in Japan by completing graphic organizers and writing a paragraph, earning a 3 or 4 on the rubrics. • 7.5.3: Describe the values, social customs, and traditions prescribed by the lord-vassal system consisting of shogun, daimyo, and samurai and the lasting influence of the warrior code in the twentieth century. • 7.5.6: Analyze the rise of a military society in the late twelfth century and the role of the samurai in that society. • All work done today will eventually become part of your Feudal Japan Poster! Today we are gathering information and taking notes to create a few pieces for the poster.

  7. Basic Poster Requirements: • Introductory paragraph summarizing the concept of Feudalism in Japan. • A visual representation showing the social hierarchy of Feudal Japan WITH a brief description of the roles of each class in that society. • Cause and Effect Flowchart analyzing the decline of imperial power and the rise of a military society during the 12th century. • A graphic organizer representing the lord-vassal relationship of shogun, daimyo, and samurai with a short explanation making sure the graphic organizer is clear. • Free Choice (1 PER GROUP MEMBER!)

Then read The Way it Was on page 496. • Tables 5 & 6: Read What is a Shogun starting at the bottom of page 494 to the end of page 495. • Tables 7 & 8: Read The Daimyo Divide Japan on page 496 to the end on page 497.

  15. Section 1: • Weak emperors need regents  fujiwara clan becomes powerful  government pays nobles with land  nobles gain control of large amounts of land  no taxes on nobles  nobles tax peasants

  17. Section 3: • Families fight for land  Gempei War  Minamoto wins  Emperor makes Yorimoto Shogun to keep him loyal  Creates 2 governments (KamikaraShogunate/Emperor)  Emperor becomes figurehead  Shogunate for 700 years • Storms defeat mongols—this is where the word kamikaze comes from

Section 4: • Samurai say not enough land from shogun  support emperor revolt  emperor doesn’t give land either  Shikaga turns on emperor  Ashikaga shogunate = weak  revolts, division into small territories ruled by daimyo  Daimyo copy older nobles and have private armies  vassals = oath of loyalty in return for land  Feudalism = bond of loyalty
