Feudalism • 1100: Emperor loses power • Clans established armies • Land given to warlords in turn for protection • Warlords (lords) surrounded themselves with warriors called samurai
Shoguns • 1192 Minamoto clan emerges • = shogun • “Supreme general of the lord’s army” • Emperor still remained, but the shogun held the power
1192-1600 • Turmoil and warfare • 1600- Tokugawa clan restored order to the chaos, became shogun, and moved his capital to Edo • Edo would come to be known as Tokyo • 1600-1868 – Japan restored period of stability • Persecuted Christians (Catholics) • 1639 – closed port
