  1. National Data Buoy CenterSCCOOS Update Don Conlee, Ph.D. Chief Scientist SCCOOS Focal Point National Data Buoy Center Stennis Space Center, MS don.conlee@noaa.gov

  2. NDBC and IOOS RA Relationship • Serve as a primary Real-Time Data Assembly Center (DAC) • Take OS data via NDBC “MODEM” program • Provide GTS Insertion • Real time distribution and archive center input • Provide RT Data Quality Assurance/QC • Enhance data utilization and visibility • Coordinate efforts with NOS/CO-OPS • Assist RA and component OS with technology, design, placement, standardization, etc. • Engage in partnerships and two-way technology transfer • RA should take active role in defining expansion of the NDBC backbone and/or additional observation requirements for existing NDBC platforms • Airlie House Report – 5X Backbone increase

  3. NDBC MODEM Kit (Meteorological and Oceanographic Data Exchange Module) Regional Observatories Sensor / Observation Observers Web-Page NDBC Web-Page ftp* NDBC QA/QC Public NDBC Dial-A-Buoy NWS GATEWAY GTS Wx. Channel Local Media NODC NCDC et.al. NCEP WFOs

  4. THE SCCOOS REGION IOOS FEDERAL BACKBONE

  5. Marine Observation Network Measurements 1For continuous winds, succesive 10-min samples 2Parameter reported on selected buoys 3Wave sampling period 40 min on some systems 4Parameter reported on selected stations 5Parameter reported on tsunami buoys

  6. The good news… • President’s FY05 budget contains funding for NDBC MON ocean parameter expansion (C-GOOS initiative). • Add ACDP and Surface Salnity to 14 buoys and 6 C-MAN stations. • Ship time for above • Formal commissioning of NDBC IOOS DAC • FY06: Continue expansion at same rate, begin directional waves effort • Goal: All standard MON buoys have full met, ocean and waves capability.

  7. Upcoming Initiatives • Climate Reference Buoy • Highly calibrated standard installation plus new sensors for CO2, radiation, precip. • Prototype FY05, begin deployment FY06 • Sentinel Subset of current network • NOPOP Buoy • In association with the current NOPP BAA proposal, provide a robust power and communications platform for instrument testing. FY05-07

  8. Summarizing… • NDBC is both a data user and a backbone provider. • We can help you get your data to the world. • We want to be of service to SCCOOS and other RAs, and want to learn from you as well. • Looking positive for ocean sensor expansion FY05 forward (C-GOOS initiative). • RA help in backbone expansion and advocacy is desired. • Thanks!
