Engaging for change: The key to successLeanne DenbyPresident, ACTS andDirector of SustainabilityMacquarie UniversitySydney, Australia
Engagement provides an opportunity for people to provide input into the change you are trying to make. It is a two way learning experience, which brings a sense of ownership to those who are most important in reaching goals and objectives. It can be a long, time consuming process…..
The reality is… • SUSTAINABILITY is only achieved by changing the fundamental nature of our organisations • Our campuses might become GREENER without changing their nature but our organisations WILL NOT become sustainable. • WHAT DOES THIS MEAN??
Engaging people BUT WHY? • People are our greatest resource • Interact with the wider community • Engaged community Positive message! Well that’s the theory…
How do you know? • People are engaged when they: • Experience the ‘aha’ moment! • Feel empowered to take action • Feel confident there will be rewards in excess of the risk • The best thing is… those who are engaged are a great source of ideas, motivation, energy and action….they can sell the message for you to others
But… • Engaged individuals need: • supportive organisational structures • to feel secure that the • change is being adequately managed… • What do you think is meant by this?
Three approaches • Attitude = behaviour • EFS approach; change mindsets • Behaviour = attitude • CBSM approach; focus on actions • Value alignment
Important to consider • Is it better to have quantity or quality?? • Pros and cons • What are you trying to achieve? • Which approach when?
Things to know • Know your community • Identify barriers – or challenges • Look for commitment • Use opportunity • Make it enjoyable and accessible • Recognition and reward • What media? • Framing the message
Summary • People are key to success – treat them with respect they deserve! • Entice commitment • Make it fun – start simple • Understand your challenges and work with your opportunities • People need a platform to engage • It needn’t take a lot of time
