About Our Author… • Jerome David Salinger • Born in New York in 1919 • Father was Jewish • Mother was Irish Catholic • Relationship with dad was NOT good • Salinger became a recluse
About Our Author… • Salinger was a man of contradictions: • Ate only vegetarian/organic food, except when with his son- they often went out for pizza together. • He enjoyed his military school experiences, but portrayed it as a “hell hole” in his novel. • Salinger thought that writers should never have their photographs appear with their work, but he would not have had a relationship with Joyce Maynard had he not seen her picture which appeared with her magazine article.
About Our Author… • Salinger was a man of conflicts: • His dad wanted him to take over the family business: importing and processing meat and cheese (yum). • He had a conflict of social status due to the mixed background he had- being half Jewish and half Catholic. • He entered the war with affection and support for the military- until he saw 50 fellow soldiers die, in one day, right in front of his eyes!
