About Oka • March 1990. • Armed members of the Mohawk first nations (Kanestake) barricaded a road near the town of Oka. • They protested the building of a Golf Course on what was considered sacred land to the First nations. • The government sent in a SWAT team and launched tear gas, in the fighting one member of the police was killed.
Continued • Soon, first nations across Canada joined the fight. • In Cold Lake (that’s right Alberta) first nations burnt bridges to a Military Base. • After 26 days the group agreed on a settlement. • 2 first nations were killed.
Outcomes • The golf course was stopped. • Land (partial) given to the Mohawks. • The international community questioned the actions of the Quebec Government. • Started the Royal Commission. • Among other things.
