Historical background (1/2) • 1952: Unesco Social Science Clearing House • 1955: Publication of Reports and Studies in the Social Sciences (1955-2001: 65 issues) • 1961: Social Science Documentation Centre • 1974: Creation of the DARE Databank • 1984: Social and Human Sciences Documentation Centre • 1995: MOST clearing house becomes part of the Documentation centre.
Historical background (2/2) • 17 May 1999: Redefinition of the Sector's missions in terms of social and human sciences information and documentation is kept pending until external evaluation is done. • July 2001: Evaluation of UNESCO’s Information services in social and human sciences conducted by an outside consultant.Conclusions are being analyzed for action.
OUR MISSION • Provides reference and information services, including online searches, to SHS Sector, as well as to the Organization as a whole and to the general public. • Develops social science information tools to disseminate information in social sciences.
What you will find at the Documentation Centre • UNESCO and SHS publications in social sciences (books and documents): - copy of every document or publication in every language published by the Sector since its creation • The International Social Science Journal - full set of the Sector’s quarterly journal since it was first published • Reference collections (atlases, dictionaries, encyclopaedias, yearbooks ...)

What we DO • Daily manage all information received at the Documentation centre. • Answer inside and outside requests in social and human sciences (bibliographic and biographical searches of information). • Provide documents. • Create and update databases and computer-based products.
DATABASEShttp://databases.unesco.org/dare/form.shtml Daredatabank was created in 1974 and is constantly updated since then. It comprises 4sets of referral data: • social science research and advanced training institutions(5,000 records) • social science periodicals(5,000 records) • social science specialists(500 records) • social science information and documentation services(1,370 records)
We develop thematic database subsets related to the Sector’s priority areas (on Internet). Human Rights Database * Migration Database * Peace Database * Poverty Database * We also provide help and expertise to database projects implemented within the SHS sector (see Bioethics database *on the web).
