What is it? • Extremely rare genetic connective tissue disorder • Causes muscles, tendons and ligaments to become ossified when damaged • Body forms second skeletal structure out of the body’s fibrous tissues, creating an internal straightjacket
Causes/Symptoms • Genetic Mutation • caused by an autosomal dominant allele of the chromosomes • Deformed big toes • Tumor-like lumps that appear suddenly • Caused by bone morphogenetic protein 4
Treatment • No current treatments but patients with FOP are advised to stay away from activities that can be hazardous that cause physical injury to the body • Steroid shots are used to help limit the abnormal bone growth.
