Learner Outcomes Must Be Established at the Institutional Level And at the Program Level And at the Course Level
Program Outcomes • Are used to determine whether the program’s purpose is being achieved. • Outcomes information provides concrete, meaningful, and useful evidence of achievement of the program’s purpose. • Outcomes also provide information to direct improvement. Thus, a program’s instructional outcomes serve as the foundation for assessment planning.
Program Mission Statement • A mission statement is a brief description of a program’s fundamental purpose. • It answers the question, “Why do we exist?” • There should be a linkage between the mission of the college and that of the program. • Likewise, their should be a connection between a program’s mission and its outcomes • A mission statement is a description of the program’s goals.
Writing Program Outcomes • What should your students be able to demonstrate? • Start small-with three to five outcomes. • Keep them measurable. • Outcomes are faculty written and updated. • Must support at least one institutional outcome.
Outcomes Schema 1. 2. 3.
Creating Program Outcomes • Number • three to five per program • Specificity • not highly detailed • Comprehensiveness • all courses must be covered • Linkage • courses…programs…institutional
Levels of Outcomes • Recognition/Recall • Comprehension/Application • Critical Thinking/Problem Solving
Linkage to Institutional Outcomes • Identification of key course outcomes. (found in course syllabi) • Identify supported program outcome of reach course outcome. • Establish uniform links from course outcomes to program outcomes. (Especially in cases of multiple instructors.)
The End Thanks!
