Three Main Components • Community Outreach • Mental Health • Cross Sector Willingness Assessment
Community Outreach • Organized & conducted by UCLA School of Public Health Center for Public Health & Disasters • CA IHP asked to organize representative sample from American Indian communities • Provide input on community concerns regarding public health emergency preparedness • Feedback from community focus groups shared with State & local health departments • To prepare & address cultural concerns during public health emergencies
Mental Health • Mental Health project also organized & conducted by UCLA School of Public Health Center for Public Health and Disasters • Goal: to include culturally appropriate preparedness strategies • CA IHP asked to organize members from various American Indian communities: • To provide recommendations on culturally appropriate simple preparedness strategies • To determine the best media to disseminate these strategies to improve the coping skills among the community members • Feedback used to assess families in need of supportive psychological care versus more intense supportive care
Cross Sector Willingness Assessment • Focus: • To assess home care workers’ willingness to work during a public health emergency • Willingness to work if afflicted with a disease • Another goal: • To bring together 8 cross sectors to focus on collaboration
