  3. Coronary Arteries These provide the heart muscle with oxygen rich blood. What’s on the exterior of the heart?

The Heart • Found in the thoracic cavity, between the lungs and slightly to the left. • It is the size of a large fist. • Contains 4 chambers • Atrium (right & left) • Ventricle (right & left) • It has 2 pumps: • Right side: Pulmonary Circulation (lungs) • Left side: Systemic Circulation (body)

  6. Pulmonary (LUNGS) Circulation The right side of the heart pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs. The left side receives oxygenated blood.

  8. Which side of the heart is larger? Why? The right side pumps blood to the lungs. The left side pumps blood to the entire body. So Which side will require more power? The left  so it is thicker & has more muscle

  14. Heart Beat • The heart makes 2 sounds as it beats: “Lub-Dub” • The sounds are caused by the closing of the valves • “Lub”  closing of both AV valves • “Dub”  closing of the aortic & pulmonary valves • The valves are supported by tendons.

  16. Heart Rate(feel your pulse) • Heart Rate is thenumber of times  beats per minute • Average rate varies  age, gender, and health • ~70 beats/min • A healthier person has a larger heart and a slower heart rate

  17. Factors that can cause the  rate to speed up: Physical activity Emotions (fear, excitement) Chemicals (ex: adrenaline, tobacco)
