Community Colleges Defined • Any institution regionally accredited to award the associates degree in arts or the associates in science as its highest degree (60 credit hours) • Functions include: • academic transfer to four year institutions, • vocational and technical training • continuing education, developmental/remedial education • community service • life-long learning Cohen and Brawer, 2008.

Local 979 • Steelworker for the Future provides graduates with three important things: • Career-focused education and training • Pay while earning a degree • Enhanced employability upon graduation • While affiliated with ArcelorMittal, the program is designed to provide individuals with skills and experience desired by manufacturers Steelworker for the Future addresses a critical workforce development need for ArcelorMittal while strengthening American manufacturing as a whole.
Nationwide Success: Launched as a pilot program in June 2008 in partnership with Ivy Tech Community College (IN) and Prairie State College (IL). Approximately 160 students are enrolled in the Northwest Indiana programs and 18 graduates are now ArcelorMittal employees.
