  3. Satellite Television Programmes are transmitted via communication satellites. Uplink satellite dish receives programme signals. It points to a satellite with a transponder. The transponder then sends the signal back to the earth to a receiving satellite usually in a household Transponder: It transmits and responds to satellite signals At the receiving satellite the signal is deflected by the shape of the dish in order to increase its strength. The signal is decoded into a picture that can be watched on tv. Refer to page 110

  4. Satellite Television cntd The receiver box also acts as a decoder. The viewing card has the programme required to carry out the decoding. The provider pays programme producers for the right to broadcast them. The signal is transmitted as compressed radio signals. The compression is called encoding. Some program providers receive the signals then use cables for onward transmission.

  5. Terrestrial Television This I in most cases referred to as braodcast television. A poerful antennae is used for broadcasting. The signal is split into separate sound and video signals. The data is gathered by transmitters for onward transmission. It combines the two signals into one signal. TV aerials must point in the direction of the transmitter. Televisions have inbuilt receivers to convert the signal into picture and audio. If there are obstacles the signals will not reach the destination. Refer to page 111
