Life Cycle • The butterfly life cycle has four stages. • The process of a caterpillar changing into a butterfly is called – metamorphosis
Stage1- Egg • The first stage of the life cycle is the egg stage. • A butterfly lays eggs on a leaf.
Stage 2 - Larva • A caterpillar hatches out of the egg. • The caterpillar eats and molts several times during this stage. • It grows bigger and fatter.
Stage 3 - Chrysalis • During this stage the caterpillar hangs in a “J” shape. • It molts for the last time. • The caterpillar is now inside a covering sometimes called a pupa.
Stage 4 - Adult • The chrysalis cracks open and a butterfly climbs out. • It hangs for a while to dry its wings. • The beautiful butterfly will start the life cycle all over again by laying eggs.
