Parents Are parents the strongest influence in the development , behavior, and intelligence of their child?
Authoritative Parenting • Combines firm limits on behavior with love, respect, and a willingness to listen to a child’s point of view. • Limits are clear and understandable. • When children cross limits they explain why the behavior was wrong, and agree upon an appropriate punishment. • In America – Authoritative parenting is considered the best form.
Methods of Discipline of Authoritative Parents • Induction – Parent appeals to abilities of child, and reasons with them to help them understand the effects of their behavior on others. • Explains to child the negative consequences of their actions.
Effects of Induction • Children feel guilty if they hurt others • Gain a sense of “right and wrong” • Lie less • Accept responsibility • Are considerate of others
Authoritarian Parenting • Overly concerned with rules • Strict, rigid, demand perfection, controlling, uncompromising • Physical punishment • Little warmth or affection • Teenagers tend to rebel against Authoritarian parents
Methods of Disciplineof Authoritarian Parents • Power assertion –Parent uses punishment and authority to correct the child’s misbehavior. • Threats, shouting, scolding, physical punishment. • Parents fail to connect the punishment to the behavior.
Effects of Power Assertion • Effects of power assertion on children: • Lack of moral feeling and behavior • Poor self-control, Low self-esteem • Poor grades and social skills • Aggression • Withdrawn, manipulative, difficult to control • Effects cause parents to assert power more. • Vicious Cycle
Permissive Parents • Put few demands on child behavior • Tend to be overinvolved in their child’s life • Friend parents • Think their child can do no wrong • Effects of children: • Selfish • Immature • Dependent on parents • Lack social skills
Uninvolved Parenting • Ignore children • Allow them to do whatever they want, unless it interferes with parents needs • Is neglectful • May be abusive • Effects: • Trust vs. Mistrust • Emotionally withdrawn • Tend to exhibit more delinquency during adolescence • Feel fear, anxiety or stress due to the lack of family support • Increased risk of substance abuse
Parents are important but… • So is the child’s personality • So is the child’s behavior • So is the influence of peers
Limits of Parenteral Influence • Parenting styles are often inconsistent • Children are resilient • Temperaments – Inborn attitudes and behavior of children may influence how a parent parents. • “Easy” - Permissive, Authoritative • “Difficult” - Authoritarian
Influence of Peers • Peers can have a powerful influence on children. • Children may behave differently with peers than they do at home. • Conform to norms of given environment. • Usually still adhere to values of parents. • Children look to peers for standards of how to dress, think, speak, and behave.
So when do parents matter? • Influence of genetics. • Though child-rearing techniques cannot overcome temperaments, it can influence behavior and social development. • Attachment styles can transfer to adulthood. • Parental involvement correlates to delinquency. • Quality of relationship with children affects whether child feels: • Loved, secure, and valued • Humiliated, frightened, worthless
