Spiritual Health Human nature has a spiritual component just as it has physiological, psychological, ad sociocultural components. Living fully requires spiritual health, as well as, mental and physical well being. The nurse delivering holistic care seeks to determine all needs, including those of the spiritual realm.
Definitions • Spirituality- • An awareness of and openness to a system of beliefs, supreme being, or God, or presence with or in each person and in the world. • Faith- • A persons response to God or supreme being, a unquestioning belief. • Religion- • An affiliation with a denomination of sect. • Religious- • The specific practices, rites, and rituals of a religion
Spiritual Health and the Nursing Process • Spiritual Assessment • Assess the client’s beliefs and practices • Assess the sources of hope and strength • Assess the client’s current state of spiritual health concentrating on behaviors, attitudes, verbalizations, and interpersonal relationships • Spiritual needs may be assessed as incongruent between professed beliefs and demonstrated actions and attitudes.

Spiritual Health and the Nursing Process • Implementation • Support and dialogue • Enhance client’s self concept • Provide opportunities and resources for reflection, prayer, other practices • Involve family and friends • Involve clergy • Other resources • Televised services, printed materials, support systems such as prayer groups
Spiritual Health and the Nursing Process • Evaluation- • Criteria include a stronger belief system, a sense of spiritual peace and strength to cope with illness or disability, a sense of meaning and purpose in life, and a love and respect demonstrated in relationships with others.
