  1. BELLWORK: Tree Map of a K-W-L ROCK CYCLE K W L What do I think I already KNOW? What do I WANT to know? What did I LEARN? Bedrock Geology IANp. 75

  2. Bedrock Geology - The Rock Cycle Overall Guiding Question: How are we interrelated? • Key Content Question: • How rocks are changed from one form to another through the rock cycle? • We will learn the processes and steps of the rock cycle to relate it to the surface and sub-surface events. Benchmark code: SC.7.E.6.2 Today’s Learning Goal:

  3. Scale for Checking Understanding • LEARNING GOAL: We will learn the process and steps of the rock cycle to relate it to the surface and sub-surface events. 4 • I can explain the relationship between the rock cycle with the surface and sub-surface events. • I can also identify level 2. 3 2 • I canidentifythe different types of rocks (metamorphic, igneous and sedimentary) and describe the processes and steps of the rock cycle. 1 • With help, I can identify and partially explain the Rock Cycle as in level 3 and 2. • I have a partial understanding but may still need help. • Even with help, I do not understand or can demonstrate any skills listed above. 0 I can create a model of the Rock Cycle to explain in-depth the effects of the rock cycle and the formation of different landforms commonly found on Earth I can also explain level 3 and 2.

  4. Make a foldable like this… 3 Kinds of Rocks Igneous Sedimentary Metamorphic Textbook Source Chapter 3.2 Textbook Source Chapter 3.3 Textbook Source Chapter 3.4 Resource: Prentice Hall - EARTH SCIENCE

  5. Inside your foldable Igneous Sedimentary Metamorphic • Igneous Rocks are formed when magma is cooled and harden. • Intrusive Igneous Rocks are cooled and harden beneath the Earth where Extrusive Igneous Rocks are hardened as lava is cooled on the surface. • Classification: Texture and composition is used to classify Igneous Rocks. • Sedimentary Rocks are formed from the weathered products of preexisting rocks that have been transported, deposited, compacted, and cemented. • Classification: These rocks are grouped into clastic sedimentary rocks and chemical sedimentary rocks. • Metamorphic Rocks are formed by the alteration preexisting rock by heat, pressure, and/or chemically active fluids called hydrothermal solution. • Classification: By texture and composition. It can be Foliated or Nonfoliated. Staple foldable onto IANp. 74

  8. Rock Cycle & Processes Staple onto IANp. 76

  9. The Mount Rushmore National Monument is carved from the granite of South Dakota’s Black Hills. This granite rock is an igneous rock.

  10. The Utahs’ Bryce Canyon are made of limestone and sandstone. This is an example of Sedimentary Rock.

  11. Here is a Gneiss Rock. Notice the ribbonlike layers formed by heat and pressure. This is a great example of a Metamorphic Rock.

  12. Conglomerate Shale Coal Dolomite Sandstone Siltstone Rock Salt Limestone Akrose

  13. Tonight’s Homework • In a Tree Map - Name and describe the six major ways of classifying igneous rock. (Chapter 3.2) on IANp. 77 top half. • Make a flow map to show the steps in the process of the formation of sedimentary rock. Be sure to describe what happens at each stage. (Chapter 3.3) on IANp. 77 bottom half.

  14. Complete the L section of the K-W-L Tree Map
