Formula SAE TeamStatus Report 211/13/2013 • Front Upright Analysis • Joseph Perry • Rear Upright Analysis • Taylor Watkins • Frame Analysis • Lloyd Outten • Josh Carroll • Intake & Exhaust Team • James Hogge • Rebekah McNally • Alisa Phillips • Henos Woldegiorgis
Uprights • Accomplishments • Finalized designs • Ordered material • Determined forces needed for stress analysis • Future Goals • Complete Stress Analysis • Complete manufacturing
Front Uprights • Solid Design, but hard to machine. The integrated components would add excess machining time and cost • Separated Tie Rod bracket from main upright. • Retains the strength and low weight of original design while lowering machining cost.
Rear Uprights • Revised Design; Added Bracing in lower portion for additional support, while adding a negligible amount of weight. • Bolt on lower mounting brackets for decreased machining time and cost. • Low weight, fully integrated design.
Upright Analysis • Equations used to calculate load on upright • Function of Lateral Force on each tire as a function of slip angle. • For our purposes 500lb is approx. 2000N. • 2000/4 tires is closest to 600N (RED)
Frame Analysis • Accomplishments • Input Geometry Into PATRAN • Future Goals • Meshing • Material Properties • CBAR Properties • Load Cases • Analysis
Frame Analysis • Using PATRAN/NASTRAN to model frame • Attempted using step file from SolidWorks • Current plan: model using CBAR which gives appearance of wire frame [Model of Imported Step File in PATRAN]
Manual PATRAN Input • Future Steps Needed to Accomplish Frame Analysis • Analysis will be run using CBAR • PATRAN will then recognize each curve as a beam • Material Properties • Cross Sectional Area , ect.
Intake/Exhaust • Current Accomplishments: • Ordered materials for intake • Continuing flow analysis • Goals for the Future: • Complete flow analysis • Fabricate intake • Flow bench testing of fabricated intake to verify flow analysis
Flow Simulation/Analysis • Analysis • Initial Testing using SolidWorks FloXpress • Initial tests: flow was through one intake runner at a time • Testing in SolidWorks modified to flow all 4 runners at a time. • Goal is to verify that the intake does not choke engine air flow -Initial flow models, one at a time -Modified test flowing through all intake runners
Flow Simulation/Analysis • Analysis(cont.) • Flow rates obtained by SolidWorks flow models will be compared to theoretical flow rates to determine theoretical volumetric efficiency • Real world Flow Bench testing in the future to determine actual volumetric efficiency
Cost Report: Parts Ordered Total Estimated Cost $217.04
