INTRODUCTION • Polyculture is the raising of two or more species in the same aquaculture system. • The polyculture technology of milkfish and siganids combination is to increase the production and income of fisherfolk. • The technology is best applied in open waters near mariculture parks or municipal waters wherein most of the management work is done by the people and fishing communities. • Currently, there is a stable supply of wild fingerlings of kitong from the private nurseries and an abundant supply of bangus fingerlings of good quality.
BIOLOGY OF MILKFISH • Milkfish (Chanoschanos) is an important food fish in the Philippines, Taiwan and Indonesia. It is a popular fish for culture because it tolerates a wide variety of salinity, temperature and water quality, adapts well to high density, and reaches marketable size in 4-7 months. • Milkfish can be raised either in extensive, semi-intensive and intensive systems. Culture areas include ponds, pens or cages. Milkfish ‘seeds’ for culture can be sourced either from the hatchery or from wild stocks. • Culture of milkfish in marine cages is intensive, characterized by a small area, high levels of inputs like seeds and feeds, which result to high yields. Milkfish farmers in the Philippines are finding it advantageous to culture fish in mariculture parks.
BIOLOGY OF SIGANIDS • Known as rabbit fish, siganids and kitongor danggit in local names. • Two siganid species commonly cultured in the Phils. (Siganusguttatus) kitong (Siganus. canaliculatus) danggit
Both species are oblong, with poisonous spines in on their dorsal, ventral anal fins. • They are primarily herbivorous in nature but may turn to other diets readily. Thus, in captivity they can feed a wide variety of foods. • Siganids are considered excellent food fish by many people in the Indo-Pacific and Eastern Mediterranean. The fish is meaty and tasty, and shows a relatively high protein. • Some species have already been traditionally farm in ponds either in monoculture or as is generally the case, with milkfish.
