In and Out of Cells • The cell membrane is like a plastic bag with tiny openings.
Materials such as water, oxygen, and glucose (sugar), pass through the cell membrane.
One way that materials move through the membrane is called DIFFUSION.
Particles move from areas of HIGH concentration to LOW concentration
Osmosis (diffusion of water) Movement of WATER molecules from high concentration to low concentration
Larger particles need to go through a membrane protein “doorway.” Passive Transport(needs no energy) Glucose molecules
Active Transport(needs energy) Requires energy because it moves from low to high concentration.
