  2. EO missions and exploitation • Envisat 8th year in operation, ERS-2 14 years in space • About 2600 scientific users / projects are served with Envisat and ERS-2 data • 30 Third Party Missions for the benefit of European users 23rd CEOS Plenary I Phuket, Thailand I 3-5 November 2009

Envisat Extension • Envisat mission extension approved by ESA Member States in May • Envisat orbit to be changed in October 2010 • Thereafter, all applications remain possible with exception of SAR interferometry Ozone layer evolution 1995-2009 Hurrican Jimena, 31 August 2009 23rd CEOS Plenary I Phuket, Thailand I 3-5 November 2009

ERS-2 and Envisat ERS-2 / Envisat Tandem campaign 2008/2009 • to measure the velocity of arctic fast moving glaciers around 200m/year • to generate accurate low relief digital elevation models- of particular interest for many low elevation delta regions (e.g. New Orleans, Po-Delta with Venice, The Netherlands, Bangladesh, Mekong Delta, Netherlands, northern Siberia, etc) • to improve the general understanding of interferometry and coherence • to rise interest in mapping fast land surface movements 23rd CEOS Plenary I Phuket, Thailand I 3-5 November 2009

ESA’s Gravity Mission GOCE (Gravity field and steady state Ocean Circulation Explorer)) • First ESA Earth Explorer dedicated to the exploration of the Earth gravity field • Several satellite technology world premiers: most sensitive gradiometer ever flown, first drag-free flight with Ion thrusters, extremely low orbit • Launched 17 March 2009 . 23rd CEOS Plenary I Phuket, Thailand I 3-5 November 2009

Earth Explorer Seven • All ITTs for the three selected candidate missions for the 7th Earth Explorer have been issued in July • Most of the six kick-off's are expected still within 2009. • The first round of meetings of each MAG has taken place to consolidate the Phase A Mission Requirements Document 23rd CEOS Plenary I Phuket, Thailand I 3-5 November 2009

Living Planet Symposium • The 2010 European Space Agency Living Planet Symposium will be held in Bergen, Norway from 28 June to 2 July 2010 and organised with the support of the Norwegian Space Center • Objectives: • a forum for investigators to present results of on-going research activities using ENVISAT, ERS, GOCE, SMOS, CRYOSAT and ESA Third Party missions data • presenting the development of applications and services including GMES • presenting the ESA Climate Change Initiative. 23rd CEOS Plenary I Phuket, Thailand I 3-5 November 2009

  11. Meteosat Third Generation MTG status • The first two major milestones of completing the Phase A Extension activities and releasing the B2,C/D ITT has been completed in July, on schedule. • The next key date is the receipt of industrial offers on 2nd October and conclusion of contractor selection by the end of this year. 23rd CEOS Plenary I Phuket, Thailand I 3-5 November 2009

  12. GSC The GMES Space Component Programme • Activities on the Sentinel-1, -2 and -3 missions is progressing well • The launch schedules have been redefined: S-1 May 2012, S-2 May 2013, S-3 April 2013 • A draft Data Policy for the Sentinel missions has been approved by ESA Member States in September • Negotiations with GMES Contributing Missions are progressing 23rd CEOS Plenary I Phuket, Thailand I 3-5 November 2009

  13. ESA Initiative on Climate Change • The rationale of the initiative : to systematically generate and distribute long-term series of “Essential Climate Variables” (ECV) to meet needs of UNFCCC and IPCC, based on ESA archived EO data • The procurement plan for the Phase 1 of the Earthwatch CCI element has been approved by IPC end of September • Programmatic activities are proceeding well. 23rd CEOS Plenary I Phuket, Thailand I 3-5 November 2009
