Prelim Preparation Performance Appreciation Revision (Badminton)
Brain warm up • Pairs Famous sports men or women beginning with… • A • F • G
Nature + Demand of Activity • You need to describe the: • Nature of Badminton • Demands of Badminton • Discuss with the person next to you for 1 minute about the NATURE and the DEMANDS of badminton
Nature • The nature of the activity means what makes the activity different from other activities. • Key features of knowledge are used to describe the nature of the activity: • Indoor / outdoor • Performance area • Directly competitive / indirectly competitive • Individual / team • Pace of performance • Scoring system • Presentation of performance / public nature • Discuss with partner
Demands of the Activity Physical Technical Demands Personal Special
Guidance to what they are… • Physical qualities categorises the body structure and aspects of fitness required in the performance. -Whole body/isolated, power, speed, agility • Technical qualities categorise the range of skills and techniques that are required in the performance. -Demonstrate control/timing/accuracy/fluency • Personal qualities categorises the internal features that each individual requires in the performance. -Deal with emotions/expectations/failure/crowd • Special qualities categorises the unique features that each individual can bring to the performance. -Magic/create/disguise
Investigating your Performance • How did you gather information on your performance? • Initial data collection - Match analysis – effectiveness of individual shots • Focused data collection – Footwork analysis – number of steps, different footwork • Focused data collection – Movement analysis – Smash, OHC… • Revise Reasons why we did this
Model Performance • Looking at the model performer can help you to identify differences between the two in terms of technical, physical, personal and mental demands on the performance. • London Olympics Final • Model performer comparison is also used to reflect on the difference between performances in relation to the repertoire of skills on view and their effectiveness in terms of control, fluency, precision • Different skills in One rally • Use to compare how the skill is performed and to plan practice • Use to compare and to plan
Compare you to Model Performer • When developing a response as a comparison your answer should include relevant points from both ‘like / unlike’ perspective • Unlike a Model Performer I do not have a repertoire of skills to meet the technical demands of -----------. I fail to execute my ............. at the correct time and lack consistency, fluency. • Unlike the Model Performer I look clumsy by comparison and lack economy of movement.. ...........they make everything look so effortless.........their movements / application of skills are used at the right time. • However like the Model Performer I can manage my emotions ........I rarely display bad temper and concentrate fully on my performance …. Etc.
Task • In Pairs • Compare each others performance. • “Like my partner I can….Unlike I cannot…..” • Both need one like and unlike which must be different – overall 2 likes and 2 dislikes between your performance • 5 minutes to discuss and prepare answer to share
Improvement Programme • Improvement Programme – Key Concept 5 • An improvement programme can focus on specific aspects of performance development eg skill only / fitness development only or it can be structured as an integrated programme where a number of factors are developed within the same programme eg skill development and fitness conditioning. • You did an INTEGRATED programme
What weakness did you identify? • Smash • Net Lift • Overhead Clear • Drop Shot • Net Play • Backhand Clear
Integrated Programme • Lasted 5 weeks • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday • Improved Footwork and ???? (skill you identified) • Improve Physical (footwork = COORDINATION) and Technical (Smash) • Progress through stages of learning (Revise) • Practices appropriate to each stage (Revise) • Initial practices focus on individual aspect. • Progressed practices combine two aspects (footwork and smash) • Did some work on strengths to maintain whole performance
Task • Describe one drill focus on footwork • Describe one drill focus on identified skill (OH clear) • Describe combination drill footwork and skill • 10 minutes to plan • 5 minutes to share with pupils developing the same skill
Mental Factors • control of aggression, anxiety (state of arousal) • codes of conduct (rules/etiquette) • maintaining motivation – intrinsic/extrinsic, confidence and concentration throughout performance • coping with stress.
Partner Presentation • 60 seconds to present to the class…. • Confidence • Level of arousal • Control of anxiety • Motivation • Determination • Concentration • Try and give the positive AND negative influence it may have and techniques to improve the mental factor
Research • Use the PowerPoint entitled “Mental Factors KC3” • 10 minutes to prepare your presentation
Monitoring, Reviewing, Evaluating Performance Appreciation KC5
Describe the methods used to evaluate the success of the programme in achieving your goals. (4) Make reference to the methods Reasons why they were appropriate Must make reference to monitoring and reviewing
This process lets us know how effective the course of action has been. Monitoring – ongoing process throughout practice / training and used when you want to see how you are progressing towards targets. Methods – receiving feedback (verbal, watching video, internal reflection – Knowledge of Performance), working towards targets (knowledge of results) Reviewing – relates to the summative process of evaluating your performance at the end of practice / training and comparing it to the performance at the start. Methods – data collection (match analysis, video (movement) analysis, results/score)
The main purpose of the monitoring and reviewing process is to provide feedback. Internal How you feel about your performance External Verbal, written, visual Qualitative feelings or comments about your performance provide feedback that helps you to understand the control, accuracy, precision, fluency of your performance egKnowledge of Performance Quantitative data provides feedback information, usually in the form of statistical data, that is used to provide an objective and base measurement of performance egKnowledge of Results
What are the benefits of monitoring (ongoing process) Reasons for ongoing monitoring? To make ongoing changes to skill action To inform when to make changes / adaptations to practice To develop motivation for continued development To assess effectiveness of practice programme To assess if goals have been achieved To give information about the next steps for development.
Reasons for summative monitoring? • Evaluate the effectiveness of the whole development process eg • What impact did the practice programme have on your performance? • Was the course of action appropriate? • What would your future plan be?
Wikispace Jigsaw answer • Answer a past paper question (given to you) on the wikispace • 4 different questions and answers for you to read and identify… • Good answers • Bad answers • Why is the answer good / bad? • What would you add to it? • What would you leave out of the answer?
Questions • Choose an Activity (BADMINTION) 1 Describe the methods used to evaluate the success of the programme in achieving your goals.(4) • Higher Paper 2009 2 (a) What do you understand about the demands of a quality performance in your chosen activity? 4 • Higher 2011 3 (a) Discuss how your overall performance compares to that of a model performance. 6 • Higher 2009 2c 4 What course of action would you take to improve your performance? Explain your reasons for this course of action. 6
