“Recovery” &“Cultural Competence” …are both sets of skills and processes, but, more importantly, they are fundamental commitments to the way we do business. They are ingrained in our corporate culture.
6 Recovery Principles • Respect • Choice and inclusion • Focus on individual as a whole person • Integration, collaboration, and participation with the community of one’s choice • Success defined on one’s own terms • Strengths-based, flexible, responsive services reflective of an individual’s cultural preferences
“Recovery” – SAMHSA’s Definition “A process of change through which individuals • improve their health and wellness, • live a self-directed life, • and strive to reach their full potential” (12/22/11) • while becoming re-enculturated • or newly acculturated
Enculturation v. acculturation Enculturation: the process of learning the rules of one’s primary culture (e.g., as a child grows up) Acculturation: the process of learning the rules of a different culture (e.g., while living abroad)
Mental illness or substance abuse—especially if it is the result of a trauma—separates a person from his or her cultural roots. One goal of recovery is to reconnect the person with his or her culture or to form bonds with a new one.
Trauma-Informed Care …is another core NARBHA value
