History • 1997 - Western Edge Cluster (WEC) established to develop a collaborative approach across Melton • 1999 – WEC programs officially started • WEC now comprises of 4 Govt. schools, 2 Independent schools, 1 Catholic College & Djerriwarrh Employment and Educational Service • Western LCP, Brimbank Melton LLEN, Victoria University and the Shire of Melton are all active cluster supporters
Operations • Principals lead by Principal Representative • 3 Business Managers (Govt. schools) – Enrolments, Finance & Memorandum of Understandings • VET Facilitator • VET Coordinators • Memorandums of Understanding – RTOs, cluster • Operational Manual – polices, procedures, common forms etc. • VET Handbook – subject selection • VET Coordinator & VET Principal meetings
WEC VET enrolment numbers • 1999 = 179 • 2000 = 169 • 2001 = 272 • 2002 = 307 + in-house113 = 420 • 2003 = 297 + in-house 163 = 460 • 2004 = 329 + in-house 75 = 404 • 2005 = 342 + in-house 86 = 428 • 2006 = 351 + in-house 49 = 400 • 2007 = 384 + in-house 25 = 407 • 2008 = 290 + in-house 10 = 300 • 2009 = 306 (as of Dec. ’08)
VET programs on offer in 2009 • Automotive • Construction • Community Services • Electro Technology • Engineering • Information Technology • Hospitality • Multi Media • Outdoor Recreation • Sport & Recreation • Hairdressing • Dance Certificates range from Certificate II, Certificate II with some components of Certificate II & III and Certificate III
WEC VET future • VET has become an integral part of the curriculum of each school • Non-government schools are aiming to add to VET subject variety & taking a more proactive role in the cluster • It is anticipated a state of the art community-based Trade Training Centre (TTC) will be established – aims to increase the participation of young people in industry standard VET programs in the Shire of Melton WEC VET Facilitator: tania@wlcp.com.au
