Smokefree Action Coalition Campaign Strategy 2010‘Make smoking history for our children’ Primary goal - to ensure a continuing commitment by an incoming government to an adequately funded comprehensive tobacco control strategy at national, regional and local level, designed to continue to reduce the harm from tobacco.
Step one - to ensure that the promised review of smokefree legislation puts back on the political agenda the harm caused by secondhand smoke in particular to children.
3. SFAC successes so far Comprehensive smokefree legislation 2007
New national strategy launched February 2010
Health Act 2009 – PoS display ban and ban on sales of tobacco from vending machines
Over 130 members and still growing.
4. Challenges Changing political environment after the election;
Economic recession;
Danger tobacco seen as done deal; and
Attempts by opponents to roll back on legislation – smokefree and PoS/vending machines.
5. Opportunities Public health a priority by Conservatives – can be called to account.
Commitment to a review of smokefree legislation keeps tobacco on the agenda.
