  1. INFO 731 Introduction Glenn Booker, Ph.D., EMT-B INFO 731

  2. Overview • This course focuses on the sociotechnical issues in healthcare IT (information technology) • This implies we get to deal with the social aspects of healthcare – strategic planning, organizational and change theory, stakeholders – and also the technical issues – systems analysis, workflows, and implementation issues • A major challenge is integrating the needs of both social and technical areas in order to develop functional healthcare IT systems that serve real needs of how healthcare services are provided INFO 731

  3. Course readings • There is no text for this course • If you really wanted one, this is good but not worth $120:Lorenzi& Riley. Managing Technological Change: Organizational Aspects of Health Informatics, 2nd ed. Springer, 2004 (reprinted 2010) • The course readings are a herd of papers (32, to be exact) from 1999 to the present • These papers are the basis for understanding most of each week’s material INFO 731

  4. Course structure • Six teams will summarize the week’s readings in Team Presentations, as discussed in the syllabus and assignment • There will be a quiz at the start of week 4, focusing on the first three weeks of material • A workflow diagram is due at the start of week 5 • The rest of the course evaluation is based on your participation in the weekly discussions, and a case study final project INFO 731

  5. Discussion participation • The syllabus has guidance on discussion participation • I’m looking for your perspectives on the material • Have you had similar or contrasting experiences? Tell us! • Are there parts of the readings that don’t make sense to you? Ask for clarification! • Do you think an author is wrong or misleading? Explain why! • The worst thing you can do is … nothing. We can’t read your mind (and it would be really rude to do so even if we could), so please share your insights. • I’m guessing we’re coming from a wide range of perspectives, so the discussions should be lively! INFO 731

  6. My background • As you’ll note from my web site, I teach primarily IT and IS (information systems) courses, based on my 18 years in industry doing systems analysis, design, development, and maintenance for defense and aviation organizations • My eclectic healthcare-related background includes • Doctorate in biomedical engineering • Two years as a student midwife (!) • Some 400 hours of massage therapy training  • Basic EMT certification • Over 20 years as volunteer in emergency preparedness (mass casualty triage, incident command, etc.) INFO 731

  7. What to do next? • Please introduce yourself to the rest of the class via Blackboard, including the following elements: • Your name, educational background, nursing specialty and proposed track • Your current or most recent position  • Where you live • Your career goal or reason for pursuing this degree • Please also indicate which of the following Core Courses you have taken prior to Informatics 526 (or if you are concurrently taking): NURS 500, 502, 527, RSCH 519, 523. • Optional--A digital photo to help us ‘picture’ you (it may include others—just be sure to identify yourself) INFO 731

  8. What to do next? • If you’re in Team 1, you need to get with your team right away! Your presentation is due in week 2 • Teams 2-6 can meet with your team at a more leisurely pace • The course readings are provided in one big zipped file • As a general guide for participation, you should post your thoughts on the week’s material by Thursday, and respond to at least 2 other posts by the end of the week (Sunday) INFO 731
