Problems in Society • Economy was in bad shape(inflation rating was high) • There was tensions between the U.S. and Soviet Union were high in the beginning of the Soviets invasion of Afghanistan • Running out of energy sources
Ronald Reagan • Republican • Running mate: George H. W. Bush • Reagan’s campaign: It appealed to Americans who were frustrated with the economy and concerned that the United States had become weak internationally. • Promised: ~ To cut taxes ~ to increase defense spending ~ Find alternative sources of oil
Jimmy Carter • Democrat • Running mate: Walter Mondale • Promised: ~ Economic renewal ~ Promised to achieve economic renewal by carefully selected spending programs and tax cuts ~Environmental reforms is the solution of the energy crisis.
The Debate • Reagan out performed Carter in the second debate. • Carter accused Reagan of planning to cut Medicare. Reagan responded with the now-famous line, “there you go again.” • Another memorable statement Reagan said was, “Are you better off now than you were four years ago?”
