Bush • Reagan’s campaign: It appealed to Americans who were frustrated with the economy and concerned that the United States had become weak internationally. • Promised: ~ To cut taxes ~ to increase defense spending ~ Find alternative sources of oil

5. Jimmy Carter • Democrat • Running mate: Walter Mondale • Promised: ~ Economic renewal ~ Promised to achieve economic renewal by carefully selected spending programs and tax cuts ~Environmental reforms is the solution of the energy crisis.

6. The Debate • Reagan out performed Carter in the second debate. • Carter accused Reagan of planning to cut Medicare. Reagan responded with the now-famous line, “there you go again.” • Another memorable statement Reagan said was, “Are you better off now than you were four years ago?”

7. Results • Popular vote: • Reagan - 43,903,230 votes - 50.75% • Carter - 35,480115 Votes - 41.01% • Electoral vote: • Reagan - 489 votes - 90.9% • Carter - 49 votes - 9.1%
