Preventing and coping with stress • Keep things in perspective * Perception, or how we see a problem, determines our stress level. IN other words, what might be a problem for one person may not be a stressful for another * Live in the present. Take each day as it comes and treasure it *
Practice assertive behavior • Assertive Behavior: The theory of assertive behavior is that every person has certain rights. When you give into pressures and do things which are against your basic beliefs, you are setting up a guilt/stress situation which may cause possible effects to your mind and body.
Practice assertive behavior • Assertive Behavior Cont.’ • Ex: You’re with a group of friends who are experimenting with drugs. They pressure you to join them. You don’t believe in what they are doing but you value your friendship. Which should you chose? • A. Leave your friends to avoid having to make a decision. • B. Fall into the peer pressure • C. Express yourself to them as to why you don’t want to take the drugs
Practice Assertive Behavior • Answer: • C • Be able to talk out to your friends why you don’t want to take the drugs. If they are your true friends they will understand. Events like these can cause tension between friends, keep to your core principles and don’t fall for the stress of keeping your friends happy.

Do no’t add to your frustrations by overextending yourself Learn Time Management Time management techniques are very helpful. Keep an appointment book to organize your time and remind yourself of important dates and events
Managing Stress cont.’ • Limit Certain foods • Eating foods with high caffeine such as soft drinks, chocolate, coffee, and some teas can cause you to be irritable and unable to cope with stress • Share your Stress • Talk out your problems. Do not internalize your issues. Talk to a trusted friend or family member.
Managing Stress Cont.; • Learn Stress Diversion Activities: • Listen to music • Walking • Enjoy Nature, study outside or read outside • Spending time with a pet • Go to the movies or Zoo • Find and develop a hobby • Sporting activities

( include positive and Negative strategies) • Do you feel stressors is affecting your schoolwork, job, relations at home or with friends?
