What is the Writing Center? • Free help with any kind of writing: • For any class • research papers, speeches, business memos, short stories, article responses, scientific papers etc. • For life • resumes, job application cover letters, scholarship application essays, etc. • For fun • blogging, that novel you’re secretly writing, poetry, etc.
What is the Writing Center? • Free help at any stage in the writing process: • Getting started I have my assignment, but I don’t know how to start! • Early draft I’ve started writing, but I’m not sure what else to add! • Final editing stages I think it’s almost ready to go, but I have a few last grammar questions!
Who can use the Writing Center? Any student currently enrolled at SCC. • Any current SCC faculty or staff member
Can I make an Appointment? YES! • Walk-in visits are always welcome, but we recommend making an appointment so that you can be sure a tutor will be available when it best fits your schedule. • Appointments are 30 minutes long, and they start on the hour and half hour anytime we are open, except the first and last hour of each day. • Call (402) 437-2627 or stop by to make an appointment in the MAC. • Make an appointment at Energy Square by emailing WritingCenter@southeast.edu. In your email, include your name, phone #, and the times you are available.
What should I bring to the Writing Center? • Assignment directions/handout • A copy of the job description or writing prompt (for a non-class project like a scholarship application) • Any notes or research, including copies of your sources • Comments from your instructor on this or other writing • A copy of your paper • If you bring a digital copy, you will need to print out a copy (for free) to use with the tutor. Plus, you can make the changes you talk about as soon as you finish! • Your SCC student ID with current quarter sticker
What help can I expect? • Our goal is to help you become a better writer. We don’t fix papers for you, but we will gladly help you identify problems and explain how and why to fix them. • Thesis/Main Idea • Content Development • Organization • Intro/Conclusion • Word Choice • Sentence Structure • Grammar • MLA, APA, or other source citation styles

How does Smarthinking work? • Fill out an online submission form. • Include a detailed description of the assignment. • More information = better feedback • Upload your essay. • Save documents in Rich Text Format (.rtf). • Not saving in this format may slow down feedback time. • Remove any graphics. • Allow 48 hours for us to get back to you. • Remember to give yourself time to make changes to your paper after you receive a response.

Tips to make the most of your visit • Visit the Writing Center early in the writing process and more than once. • Come with a clear goal in mind: getting started, organizing and developing paper content, learning how to cite sources, etc. • Bring all relevant materials: drafts, sources, directions, a flash drive with your file saved on it, etc.
