Goals & Objectives • Recruit prospective teachers • Increase number, quality, & diversity of future teachers • Encourage specific teaching fields: Science, Mathematics, Careers, and Technology
PROGRAM ELEMENTS • Course: EDUC 1301 Intro to Ed/Schooling in a Democracy • Support: Mentor Teachers; Peer Mentors; Tutors • Pre-Teaching Experiences -- Field-based Observations
PROGRAM ELEMENTS CONT… • Industry Site Visits (Job Shadowing) • Service Learning Project (Extended ACCESS-TP) • Financial Incentives for Students: • Tuition; Community College Teaching Scholars Program Scholarships; Service Learning Stipend
RESULTS • 33 PreService Teachers at Del Mar College • 4 Transfers to 4-year universities • 2 Peer Mentors at Universities (‘home grown’) • Diversity in the TP pool exceeds minority representation in the community: • 19 White; 13 Hispanic; 1 Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian
CHALLENGES • Student Connections • Identifying peer mentors • Recruiting program participants • Transfer to 4-year university -- socialization issues • Industry Collaborations • Fast Track Planning and Implementation
LESSONS LEARNED • Partnerships are critical to success of TP. • Advisory Teams are energizing. • Participation in federal projects strengthens TP. • Dedicated personnel to special projects is essential. • Recruiting, Targeting, and Tracking system is critical for TP student pool identification.
