  14. TOP TEN WAYS TO HELP YOUR CHILD HAVE A SUCCESSFULSCHOOL YEAR

  15. #10 • Encourage your child to advocate for himself/herself. Encourage him/her to approach teachers, counselors, teacher assistants, and other staff with a concern or problem. We want to encourage students to become problem solvers.

  16. #9……… • Check your child’s planner daily for homework. All teachers encourage students to write assignments in their planner as they write the assignments on the board.

  17. #8……… • Remind your child that even when there is not homework on a certain night in a subject, he/she can preview the next section, study ahead for a quiz, test, work on a project, or read.

  18. #7……… • Teach time management skills to your child. If students are spending an inordinate amount of time on an assignment or project, help them create a plan to make the task more manageable. No matter what they say, teachers do not assign a big project and expect it to be complete the very next day!

  19. #6……… • Make sure your child has the necessary school supplies ALL year. Check that they have pens, pencils, paper, notebooks, etc. because those supplies often mysteriously disappear after the beginning of the school year.

  20. #5……… • Employ the method of gradual release of responsibility for assignments. Students may need more help at the beginning of the year but should gain independence throughout the school year.

  21. #4……… Track your child’s progress throughout each quarter.

  22. #3……… • Call the front office to report an absence and request homework. Homework requests for absences of more than two days are coordinated through the front office . If your child is absent for one day, they can get missed work from their teachers upon their return. • Students are allowed 1.5 days for every day of absence to make up missed work.

  23. #2……… • Be A Part By Taking Part! Encourage your child to get involved by joining a team, club, activity, or additional opportunities throughout the day.
