  1. Quick Start Project • Launch ArcView • Select Open an Existing Project • In the Directory window, navigate to . . . C:\esri\av_gis30\avtutor\arcview) • In the File Name window select qstart.apr • In the Project Window note the three Project Views, select United States • Click on Open

  2. Customizing a Theme’s Legend • Single click to select the US States Theme • Double click and change the Legend to a Unique Value • Change value field to show State_name • Change the color scheme • Select Apply • Hide the lengthy legend list (Hint: Theme, Hide\Show Legend. )

Add Themes & PracticeNote the User Friendly Data • Click the + (Add Theme) button • Navigate to c:\arcview\esridata\usa folder • Scroll to the bottom of the list in left window • Single-click to select rivers • Shift-click onlakes and counties to select them also • Click OK • Note: new Themes are added at the top.

Legend Editor • Highlight US States Theme • Double click US States Theme to open Legend Editor • Change Legend Type to Unique Value • Change Values Field to State_name • Change Color Schemes with drop down menu and click Apply • Click X - top right of property bar to close • ClickTheme, Hide/Show Legend

  5. Basic Skills Practice • Double click on the Rivers Theme • Change the color and thickness of the symbol by double clicking on it • Using the Identify Tool to see the identity of a couple rivers. • Use the label tool and label the rivers manually

  6. Rivers Task • The Colorado River runs through which states? • Open new View • Select View, Properties from top Menu • Name the view Colorado River • Change Map Units to Meters • Distance Units to Miles

  7. Rivers Task • Copy the Rivers & US States themes to this View. • Use the Find tool and search for Colorado River by typing “colorado” (River turns yellow) • Click on US States Theme so it is active • Click Theme (top menu) • Click Select By Theme • Click New Set • What happens on your map? • Mississippi Drainage Task
