5 th Grade MidYear Science Review, Part 3. 5.8A Differentiate between weather and climate.
E N D
5.8A Differentiate between weather and climate. In winter, do you wear a thick coat and gloves? Or do you wear a t-shirt and shorts? What you wear in winter depends on where you live. Some places are very cold in winter while others are warm, or even hot. Different places on Earth have different climates.
Climate on Earth 5.8A Differentiate between weather and climate. Look at the pictures. What do you think the climate is like in each place? Hawaii Chihuahua Desert, Texas Every place on Earth has a climate. Climate is the weather patterns in an area over a long period of time. Alaska
5.8A Differentiate between weather and climate. Weather includes: The temperature of the air The speed of the wind The amount of moisture in the air (humidity) Precipitation such as rain, snow, sleet, or hail
Comparing Climate and Weather Climate does not change from day to day. Climate is an area’s weather pattern over a long period of time. Weather is different from climate. Weather can change from day to day.
5.8A Differentiate between weather and climate. Answer questions 21-24 on the review sheet.
The movement of water from the ground to the atmosphere and then back to the ground is called the Water Cycle. 5.8B Explain how the sun and the ocean interact in the water cycle. Condensation Precipitation Evaporation Accumulation and run-off
The energy that causes water to evaporate from oceans, rivers, streams and puddles comes from the sun. 5.8B Explain how the sun and the ocean interact in the water cycle. The sun is the driving force in the water cycle!
Answer questions 25-27 on your review sheet. 5.8B Explain how the sun and the ocean interact in the water cycle.
Why do we only see the sun part of the time? 5.8C Demonstrate that Earth rotates on its axis once approximately every 24 hours causing the day/night cycle and the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky. Sometimes we go outside and the sky is bright. We are able to see everything around us! Other times the sky is dark and it is hard to see across the street. What makes this difference? Why is the sky bright some of the time and dark the rest of the time? 10
Day and Night 5.8C Demonstrate that Earth rotates on its axis once approximately every 24 hours causing the day/night cycle and the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky. 11 The reason we can’t see the sun all the time is because the Earth is constantly rotating, or spinning, on its axis.
5.8C Demonstrate that Earth rotates on its axis once approximately every 24 hours causing the day/night cycle and the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky. An axis is an imaginary line that goes through the Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole. 12
5.8C Demonstrate that Earth rotates on its axis once approximately every 24 hours causing the day/night cycle and the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky. How long do you think it takes the Earth to rotate once on its axis? 13
5.8C Demonstrate that Earth rotates on its axis once approximately every 24 hours causing the day/night cycle and the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky. It takes the Earth 24 hours to make one rotation on its axis. 14
5.8C Demonstrate that Earth rotates on its axis once approximately every 24 hours causing the day/night cycle and the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky. Day and night are caused by the rotation of the Earth on its axis. 15
5.8C Demonstrate that Earth rotates on its axis once approximately every 24 hours causing the day/night cycle and the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky. The side facing away from the sun has night. The side of the Earth facing the sun experiences daytime. 16
5.8C Demonstrate that Earth rotates on its axis once approximately every 24 hours causing the day/night cycle and the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky. It takes the Earth 24 hours to make one rotation on its axis. 17
5.8C Demonstrate that Earth rotates on its axis once approximately every 24 hours causing the day/night cycle and the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky. This day/night cycle takes 24 hours or 1 day! 18
5.8C Demonstrate that Earth rotates on its axis once approximately every 24 hours causing the day/night cycle and the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky. It takes the Earth 24 hours to make one rotation on its axis. 19
5.8C Demonstrate that Earth rotates on its axis once approximately every 24 hours causing the day/night cycle and the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky. The Earth rotates counter-clockwise, or to the East. That’s why the sun appears to move from East to West in the day sky! 20
5.8C Demonstrate that Earth rotates on its axis once approximately every 24 hours causing the day/night cycle and the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky. It takes the Earth 24 hours to make one rotation on its axis. 21
7:00 a.m. 8:00 a.m. 5.8C Demonstrate that Earth rotates on its axis once approximately every 24 hours causing the day/night cycle and the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky. 9:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. or noon The sun doesn’t really move—it just appears to because the Earth is moving! 22
5.8C Demonstrate that Earth rotates on its axis once approximately every 24 hours causing the day/night cycle and the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky. It takes the Earth 24 hours to make one rotation on its axis. 23
5.8C Demonstrate that Earth rotates on its axis once approximately every 24 hours causing the day/night cycle and the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky. Answer questions 28-30 on your review sheet. 25
