STARTER 26 000, 26, 260 . WHICH NUMBER IS MISSING IN THE SEQUENCE?
2600 WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE NUMBERS?
WHAT HAPPENS IF WE MULTIPLY 19 BY 10? 19 X 10 = 190 It looks as if we ‘add a zero’ because the numbers all move one place along the place value grid to the left.(the number is 10 times bigger) Numbers have digits that occupy particular places according to their value.
Multiplying by 100 • What do you think is the multiplication question in the grid?
19 x 100 • When you multiply a number by 100, the number becomes 100 times bigger! • Multiplying by 100 is the same as multiplying by 10 and by 10 again
Multiplying decimals by 10,100 and 1000 Sam has saved £3.46. His rich uncle says he will multiply his savings by 100! £3.46 x 100 =
Have a go! 1.8 x 10= 3.9 x 10= 1.38 x 100= 27.9 x 100= 0.056 x 10=
Di viding by 10 The length of Jo’s shelf is 126cm. He wants to put 10 boxes on this shelf. How much space will she have for each box? 126cm ÷ 10 =
Dividing by 10 When dividing by 10, the digits move to the right one place. ( the number is 10 times smaller) 126cm ÷ 10 = 12.6cm Joe has 12.6cm for each of her boxes.
What happened? Each digit has moved one place to the left. The opposite of what happened in multiplication, were each digit moved to the right.
Have a go! 18÷ 10 = 374 ÷ 10 = 257 ÷ 100 = 81352 ÷ 1000 = 1.34 ÷ 100 =
