  2. BR #38October 22, 2012 • A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. • A declarative sentence makes a statement. It ends with a period. • EX: Ecologists study relationships in nature. • An interrogative sentence asks a question. It ends with a question mark. • EX: Do animals and plants depend on each other? • An exclamatory sentence expresses strong feeling. It ends with an exclamation point. • EX: What important work ecologists do! • An imperative sentence gives a command or makes a request. It ends with a period or an exclamation point. • EX: Look at these animals.

  3. BR #39October 23, 2012 • Determine if each sentence is declarative, interrogative, imperative, or exclamatory. • 1. Environmentalists care about preserving the natural environment. • 2. They also are concerned about conserving natural resources. • 3. Does environmentalism involve recycling waste, too? • 4. Ecologists tell us about the effects of air pollution. • 5. Is “going green” a phrase that shows concern for the environment? • 6. Examine the source of water supply.

BR #40October 24, 2012 • Every sentence has two parts: a subject and a predicate. • The subject part of a sentence names whom or what the sentence is about. • The predicate part of the sentence tells what the subject does or has. It can also describe what the subject is or is like. • A sentence must have both a subject and a predicate. It must also express a complete thought. • EX: Many forests are endangered.

It may be also missing a subject, a predicate, or both. • You often use sentence fragments when you speak. You should use complete sentences, however, in anything you write for school or business.
