BR #48November 5, 2012 • Finding the Subject and Predicate Continued: • The predicate also precedes the subject in statements beginning with There is, There are, Here is, or Here are. • EX: There are environmental laws. • In commands the subject is usually not stated. The predicate is the entire sentence. The word you is understood to be the subject. • EX: (You) Plant these seedlings.

The production of clean lumber takes several years. • 2. Lumber companies buy large amounts of timber. • 3. Think of heavy chain saws. • 4. Do plants sprout easily in the region? • 5. Here is a book about ecology.
BR #50November 7, 2012 • Compound Subject and Compound Predicates • A sentence may have more than one simple subject or simple predicate. • A compound subject has two or more simple subjects that have the same predicate. The subjects are joined by and, or, or nor. • EX: Rangers and loggersstudy forest conditions. • Practice: Underline the compound subject in the sentence. • EX: Trees and grass hold soil in place.
BR #51November 8, 2012 • When the two simple subjects are joined by and or by both…and, the compound subject is plural and takes the plural form of the verb. • EX: Rangers and loggersstudy forest conditions. • In the sentence above, the verb study agrees with the plural compound subject. When all parts of a compound subject refer to the same person, place or thing, the subject takes the singular form of the verb.
