  1. Kepler’s Laws

  2. Johannes Kepler • German Mathematician in the early 1600s • Believed in the Copernican Model • Assistant to Tycho Brahe • Used Brahe’s Data to formulate three laws of planetary motion

  3. Kepler’s Laws of Planetary Motion • First Law • The Law of OrbitsAll planets move in elliptical orbits with the Sun at one focus. Foci Minor Axis Major Axis Semi-Major Axis

  4. Kepler’s Laws of Planetary Motion (continued) • Second Law • The Law of Areas-A line that connects a planet to the Sun sweeps out equal areas in equal times.

  5. Kepler’s Laws of Planetary Motion(continued) • Third Law • The Law of Periods-The square of the period of any planet is proportional to the cube of the semimajor axis of its orbit.

  6. Applying the Laws • The first law establishes that the planets can not be assumed to be in perfect circles • The second law establishes that an orbiting planet/satellite will move at a higher speed when it is closer to what it is orbiting.

  7. Applying the Laws (continued) • The third law allows us to set up a ratio.
