Biography • Born January 1, 1919 in New York • Died January 27, 2010 in Cornish, New Hampshire (91 years old) • Jerome David Salinger is his full name • One brother • Father owned a ham and cheese import business • Didn’t find out his mother wasn’t Jewish until his 14th birthday
Education • Attended McBurney School, until he was kicked out • Attended Valley Forge Military Academy • After military school, he attended New York University • His father shipped him overseas to learn about business • Attended Ursnis College, then took night classes at Columbia University
Work Life • Wrote books throughout college and army • Drafted into the army in 1942 • Had nervous breakdowns after his army stint ended
Writing • Writing style is brutally honest • Most famous book “Catcher in the Rye” • “Frannyand Zooey” characters based off of his wife and brother • “Catcher in the Rye” has been cited several times as reasons for killing people, most famously, John Lennon, and Ronald Regan • He kept many manuscripts in a safe • At least 5 unpublished works to come out between 2015-2020
Love Life • Met wife German Sylvia in the hospital. • Divorced after 8 months • Married again in 1955 to Claire Douglas • Together for about 12 years • Had two kids, Margaret and Matthew • 6 Years later dated a college freshman
