Summer Student Volunteer Internships Newark-Wayne Community Hospital and DeMay Living Center
Who? • 14 years of age or older • Completed the 8th grade • Interested in or considering career in healthcare • Care about others and want to make a difference • Want to meet real needs
Who? • Students that • Are self-motivated • Take initiative • See problems and bring solutions • Work independently and yet are team players • Listen well and abide by instructions • Have a desire to learn • Care about others and their well-being
What? • One 3-week volunteer internship session offered during the summer • Monday – Friday, 4 hours a day • 8 am-noon or noon-4 pm • times available are based on department • Total of sixty (60) volunteer internship hours • placement not guaranteed • openings are available for ten students
What Will Students Do? Various placements are available, such as: • General assistance on Patient Units • Assistance with Outpatients • Clerical and Office Assistant Roles • Patient Discharge and Transport Assistance • Visiting with Patients
Where? • Newark-Wayne Community Hospital • DeMay Living Center Note: Location depends on volunteer assignment and position
When? • July 21 – August 8, 2014 (Application deadline May 1st) • Orientation Training (required) – July 9, 2014 (1:00 - 5:30 pm)

How? • Request and complete the application • Interview • Criminal background reference check • Medical clearance • Learn of acceptance/regret • Participate in entire general orientation and training session • Obtain ID badge and volunteer uniform
How? • Mandatory General Orientation Training Session: Wednesday, July 9 , 1 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
How? • Application Packet contains • Application form • Background check form • Standards of Behavior committment form • Essay of Intent form • “Why do you want to volunteer with Newark-Wayne Community Hospital / Demay Living Center?” • Applicant and Parental / Guardian Consent Agreement and Contract • Two Letter of Reference forms • Documentation of Numeric Grade form
How? • Health Screening involves: • Completing Health Review Questionnaire • Meeting with your own doctor • Obtain immunization records or having blood-work done to verify immunization • Receive a PPD tuberculosis skin test (test is “planted” in arm one day and needs to be viewed by doctor or certified nurse two days later) • Appointment at NWCH Team Member Health Services • Receive 2nd PPD and urine drug screen • Clearance issued within one (1) week
How? • Placements/assignments are determined based on: • Application information • Grade level and age requirements • One-on-one interviews with the student • Openings available within departments
