Sonar By: Krys Parker, Julia McLees ,and Warren Neal
Purpose • Sonar is used to measure depths and locate objects so that we can map the ocean floor
More about sonar • It was Lewis Nixon who invented the very first sonar- type listening device in 1906 while trying to detect ice burgs in the area. • There are two types of sonar, the passive sonar and the active sonar • Another name for sonar was sound navigation and ranging.
Passive Sonar • Passive sonar is essentially listening for the sound made by vessels.
Active Sonar • Active sonar is emitting pulses of sound waves and listening for the echoes.
How sonar works • Step one: a special navigation system listens for sounds. • Step two: it reads the sounds and determines how far away it is. • Step three: they travel to that area and see if they found whatever they were looking for.
Who uses sonar? • Geologists can use sonar mapping to look below the ocean bottom to learn something about the underlining rock structures • Oceanographers/marine biologists use sonar to help us gain a better understanding of how are oceans and living creatures in them function as a ecosystem
What types of animals use sonar • Dolphins, whales, some fish and bats are just some of the animals that use sonar in there daily lives to find there way as they move about.
Sonar Helps End War • Sonar was first proposed to help detect icebergs at sea. Later on, it became popular to detect enemy submarines during World War I.
Sonar for Fun • Sonar is used for fish finding, especially during deep sea fishing.
Homework • Write one paragraph on what you learned about sonar from today. Write it in the left side of your notebook. • DUE MONDAY!
