  1. Minerals The substances that make up rocks and Earth’s surface

  2. Metamorphic Process • Metamorphic Greek word meaning “to change from “ • Either rock igneous or sedimentary may be transformed into a metamorphic rock • Physical or chemical changes high pressure and high temperatures • Changes of rock texture & mineralogy while remaining solid

  3. Metamorphic Rock • Shaleslateschist (if more H&P are added) • Shale or granitegneiss • Limestonemarble

  4. Metamorphic rock Classified into two textural groups foliated & nonfoliated

  5. Foliated Layers and bands of minerals (sheet-like) Slate: very fine grained rock, resembles shale

  6. Foliated Metamorphic Rock

  7. Nonfoilated Blocky crystal shape Marble: parent rock is limestone

  8. Nonfoliated Sedimentary rock Marble

  9. Do you think fossils are preserved in metamorphic rocks? Why? • How are metamorphic rocks used by society ? • What is their value?

  10. Homework Read text p 145-149
