Work-Based Certification • Work-Based Certification Requirements • Years 3-5 (CATE Pre-Professional Certificate) • Pass Basic Skills examinations (WorkKeys)* • Complete six semester hours of approved coursework • (Can complete earlier) • *All CATE teachers are expected to take the basic skills examinations at least once a year until all portions are passed.

Work-Based Certification Professional coursework needs to total six semester hours from the following pedagogy areas: Induction/Teaching Methods Curriculum Design/Development Classroom Management Testing, Measurement and Assessment Behavioral Psychology Integrating Technology into the Classroom Reading and Writing in Content Area Middle/High Courses need to be from a regionally accredited college or university. Any course not in the above areas must be pre-approved by me.
Work-Based Certification All document submissions should include a change/action form Documents for initial certification such as test scores and transcripts should be submitted to altlicensure@ed.sc.gov or transcripts@ed.sc.gov or faxed to 803-896-0368 Specific questions and requests should be sent to me: ssenf@ed.sc.gov or 803-896-0346
Work-Based Certification DIRECT I and III usually starts in July for four days or September for four Saturdays DIRECT II and IV usually starts in late January for four Saturdays and late June for four days A new hire must start DIRECT I if hired in time to start one of the classes. If the new teacher is hired after DIRECT I starts in September, they must start with DIRECT II in January, then take DIRECT I in July. Failure to enroll in DIRECT can result in an Expired license. DIRECT I is a quick start that covers many areas DIRECT II focuses on classroom management DIRECT III focuses on curriculum DIRECT IV focuses on Assessment
