DAPPS Goal Setting • Dated: Effective Goals Have Specific Deadlines • Achievable: Effective goals are realistic. • Personal: Effective goals are your goals, not someone else’s. • Positive: Effective goals focus your energy on what you do want rather than what you don’t want. • Specific: Effective goals state outcomes in specific, measureable terms.
Dated • Put a specific deadline on when you will accomplish your goal. You can always revise your deadlines but without a specific date to complete your goal you could pursue your goal without ever completing it. • Example: For the next 32 days, I will do the following actions to meet my goal of ___________.
Achievable • A goal needs to be realistic and stretch you enough so you feel you will accomplish it but only with a strong commitment from you. • Example: For a typical “B” student, “I will get a B+ average GPA this semester.”
Personal • Make your goals yours, contributing to your personal dreams, needs and wants. Trust that you know what is best for you. • Example: I am working toward my high school degree because I want to be a successful teacher someday.
Positive • Focus your energy on what you do want to do rather than on what you don’t want. Change negatively-worded goals into positively-worded ones. • Example: I will complete my homework on the day that it is assigned, versus I will stop procrastinating.
Specific • Be detailed, exact and thorough. • Example: I will complete my math homework on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6-8 pm, versus a vague goal to study more.
Your Academic Goal • Because I know that this commitment will keep me on the course to success, I promise that every day for the next 32 days I will take the following actions:
Some Ideas to Consider • Responsibility • Motivation • Self-Management • Interdependence • Self Awareness • Life Long Learning • Emotional Intelligence • Self-esteem
Responsibility • Who is in charge of your life?
Self Motivation • What are your goals and dreams? What outcomes and experiences do I want to create? What’s my educational goal? What job/career do I want? What legacy do I want to leave?
Interdependence • Who do I associate with? Will I help others? Will I ask for and accept help? How?
Self Awareness • What are my habit patterns? Which habits support my success? Which habit sabotage success? How can I change the habits that sabotage me?
Life Long Learning • What do I need to learn to achieve my goals? How can I use what I am learning in every course I take? How can I create a deep and lasting learning? What life lessons do I need to master success? How can I develop wisdom?
Emotional Intelligence • How do I experience life fully yet manage my emotions so that I stay on course to my goals and dreams?
Self Esteem • Who am I? What do I value? How can I feel even more confident? What reputation do I have with myself?
Your 32 Day Commitment • Develop a goal that follows the DAPPS Format. • Example: Because I know that this commitment will keep me on the course to success, I promise that every day for the next 32 days I will take the following two actions:
