2. Basic Details… • Birth date and Birthplace: Juan Bautista Mayno was born in Pastrana, Spain in 1578 A.D. (Exactdate unknown) • Nothing is known about Juan Bautista Mayno’s family life. • Education: Juan Bautista Mayno was a pupil of El Greco, although some say he trained in the styles of Carracci and Guido Reni, for his painting style were quite different over time in Spain. • Occupation: He served as a Dominican and joined the convent of San Pedro Mártir in Toledo, became tutor for King Philip IV in 1620, and helped arrange patronage for Alonso Cano in court. Mayno was admired as a miniature portraitist, and he helped Diego Velázquez in his early career.

Toledo is located approximately 70 • kilometers south of Madrid. • 1612: Juan paints the altarpiece of the Cuatro Pascuas, for the main • altar of the church of San Pedro Mártir, now in the Museo del • Prado. The museum is located in Madrid.

5. Accomplishments and Contributions to the Society. What accomplishments did he make that makes him memorable? Juan Bautista Mayno was admired as a miniature portraitist. As you know, not much is known about him or his disciples, such as Juan Ricci. But we do know that he had helped Diego Velázquez in his early career. Diego Velázquez had a strong influence on Spanish painters and the Spanish Renaissance Era, and was greatly known all over Spain and other countries. Velázquez’s such influential paintings quickly overshadowed Mayno and other “low profile” painters during that time, which is why we don’t see much of Mayno’s paintings today. Here is Juan Bautista Mayno’s “Adoration of the Shepherds” is admired and known well in Toledo.

6. Qualities of Juan Bautista Mayno What qualities made this person interesting? Juan Bautista Mayno was a “quiet” type of artist that preferred to “stay inside” even if grew famous. Although eclipsed by his former co-painter Diego Velázquez, Mayno continued to work on sculpture and portraits for the rest of his life. The only thing he would draw on was canvas, except when he was sculpting, of course. Another interesting quality was that he became a Dominican and a friar. He joined the convent of San Pedro Mártir in Toledo, which influenced him to draw with holy passion. One example was in the painting in the previous slide “Adoration of the Shepherds”.

7. An Interesting Fact. Did you know that Juan Bautista Mayno painted the altarpiece of the Cuatro Pascuas, for the main altar of the church of San Pedro Mártir, now in the Museo del Prado?!?! Here is the picture that will always be on display at the Museo del Prado.

8. Conclusion Juan Bautista Mayno was an extraordinary painter that continued to thrive until his death in 1649. Although he is not widely known, some of his paintings are very moving and are in art galleries all over the world, especially in Spain and in Toledo, where he spent most of his life. At first he seemed like any other painter, boring and painting all these people and stuff. But I learned that he was much more than just a painter: he was a friar, a tutor, and even was associated with court. I hope that his many of his paintings will get noticed and admired throughout the world.
