From Boom to Bust: Hitting the Road80% of families had no savings
An African American Family: Many African Americans were discriminated against during the Depression. They suffered the most…almost impossible to find a job. Fifty percent were unemployed by 1932.
It’s the Dust Bowl!! The Dust Bowl occurred in the Prairie States between 1936-1939. Parts of Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas were hit the hardest. Many headed west to California to find new farmlands or jobs.

Causes of the Great Depression: How Could This Have Happened? • Easy Credit: many people went into debt after buying goods on the installment plan- buy now and pay later
Stock Market Crashes!! 1929 • October 29, 1929- “Black Tuesday” biggest slump in prices. 16 million shares worth nothing now! 30 billion dollars..the crash wakes up America.
Why did the market crash? Speculation: buying and selling of stocks based on how it looks (high and low) Buying on Margin: paying small % of stock price as a down payment, and borrowing the rest
Leads to…. • Bank Failures • Banks were NOT insured • Money was “gone” – no savings, no checking • Banks closed and peoples accounts wiped out!
