Self-Organization In Network GlassesPunit Boolchand, University of Cincinnati, DMR 0456472 Reversibility windows represent regions of phase space where network glasses self-organize. We now show [1] that these windows occur in ionic glasses. In (Na2O)x(GeO2)1-x glasses the window is found in the 14% < x < 19% soda range. The stress-free character of networks in the window is illustrated in Bire-fringence measurements. Black spots are regions of frozen stress. Spots are observed at soda conce- ntrations outside the window but but not in the window ( 2 middle panels). [1] K.Rompicharla et al. submitted to Phys.Rev. Letters.
Self-Organization in Network GlassesPunit Boolchand, University of Cincinnati, DMR 0456472 Education: Ideas on self-organization of disordered networks are introduced in three graduate courses (ECE 757,809,810) offered by the PI at Univ. of Cincinnati. Small groups are an effective means of reaching students. Here we have 3 undergraduate and 1 graduate student with the PI near a poster describing some of our recent work relevant to EE. Senior Thesis projects then provide a means to involve undergraduates in research. The students above include Chad Holbrook (gr), Shika Goya l(ug), Kyle Hardin (ug),and Steve Herman(ug).
