Apoptosis • Apoptosis-is cell programmed cell death • Apoptosis is a well regulated physiological process • Disturbance of the balance between cell proliferation and cell death maintained by apoptosis can result in serious disease, in particular cancer.
ICE-like proteins • The Ice-like protein are suicide weapons that consist of various protein cleaving enzymes • They are like: a collection of sharp knives that are activated and destroy the cell when enzymes are activated • Future: want to learn to activate the proteion when they need apoptosis
FAS • FAS is a receptor that when triggered the cell goes through apoptosis • FAS-could activate cell death if it meets an activated T cell with FAS ligand
FAS ligand • “Our dream would be to give the brain gene therapy which would cause it to express what’s called FAS ligand, an anti-FAS molecule that binds to FAS and triggers specific cell death,”
BCL-2 • BCL-2 is a anti-apoptotic gene • The Bcl-2 gene was discovered in 1985 • Bcl-2 was recently found to prevent the release of AIF and cytochrome C from mitochondria which is assumed to be a key event during apoptosis.
p53 • P53 is an inducer, it can cause viruses to inactivate or degrade. • The p53 gene is altered in approximately 50% of all human malignancies. • P53 mutations have been described in ovarian cancers.
