  1. Remote Sensing Application DivisionClimate Change Committee John McCombs, Chair Vacant, Assistant Chair 3/19/2012 2-3pm, Room 310

  2. Agenda • Committee Vision and Mission • Brainstorm and develop draft statement • Assistant Chair? • Hot Topic and Special Session ideas  • Moving forward: Quarterly meetings (Net-meeting, telecon) • Goals: 6-month, 12-month…

  3. The RSAD has formed a Climate Change Committee to • provide technical direction to the Divisions in matters relating to climate change applications • interact with other divisions to find common-interest applications • organize climate change technical content for the PE&RS journal, conference special sessions, and workshop topics • support sensor calibration activities with the Primary Data Acquisition Division • help recruit students into the division • assist the division in setting priorities, including participating in ongoing planning activities of the division

  4. Vision CCC Vision • Remotely sensed imagery and geospatial data will be accurately acquired and appropriately used for monitoring and modeling climate change at global, national, and regional scales. ASPRS Vision • The American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing promotes accurately described and widely available imaging and geospatial information that is broadly applied to improve the analyses and decisions necessary to sustain and enhance the global quality of life.

  5. Mission CCC Mission • The Climate Change Committee falls under the Remote Sensing Applications Division. Its purpose within ASPRS is to develop guidelines and best practices for the use of remotely sensed and geospatial data within the arena of climate change; promote the understanding and use of geospatial data for climate change; provide an avenue for ASPRS to become more active in national and international climate change organizations and activities. ASPRS Mission • The mission of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing is to promote the ethical application of active and passive sensors, the disciplines of photogrammetry, remote sensing, geographic information systems, and other supporting geospatial technologies; to advance the understanding of the geospatial and related sciences; to expand public awareness of the profession; and to promote a balanced representation of the interests of government, academia, and private enterprise.

  6. Approaches • Work with other Divisions (PDAD) within ASPRS to develop calibration procedures and standards for the use of current, and future, remotely sensed data sources focused on climate monitoring. • Work with other Divisions (GIS) within ASPRS to develop best practices and GIS modeling approaches for climate change at multiple scales, especially the down-scaling of coarse-scale (global) models to more fine-scale (regional) uses. • Encourage and develop publications focused on using geospatial data to further our understanding of climate change processes and impacts. • Sponsor special sessions or Hot Topics at Annual and Fall ASPRS Conferences focusing on Climate Change issues. • Identify and work with external organizations interested in climate change which may benefit from the skill sets within ASPRS. • Develop outreach material (brochures, one-pagers, rack-cards, web material, etc.) to promote the Committee and ASPRS in general.

  7. Hot Topic ideas? • Landsat 8 and climate change • Calibration, applications, transitions and continuity, etc. • Comparisons between MODIS and follow-on system • Essential climate variables from GOESS • Imagery tied to biophysical processes • Scaling of global models • Change detection: forest dynamics, coral reefs, assessing biomass • Carbon management • Disaster management • Correlate spectral changes to physical changes (e.g., plant stress, community/population shifts) • Methods to differential seasonal/cyclical changes from climatic changes

  8. Goals? • What can we hang our hat on in 6-months? 12 months?
