BASICS • What’s a foul • Is all contact a foul? • If not, how do you discern the difference? • Advantage vs Disadvantage • Stay in your primary • Trust your Partner • Referee the defense • Call the Obvious • Communicate Effectively
Stay in your Primary • Officiate what is in your area • Don’t ball watch • Allow your partner to blow, or blow it (within reason) in their area T L
Trust Your Partner • Trust your partner to make the call • C’mon get if you must • Trust each other to handle the discussion of a play maturely • Don’t ball watch T L
Referee the DEFENSE • In the perimeter, find the angle to see more of the floor • Look through the ball • Don’t focus just on the dribbler…look ahead • Pick up the DEFENDERS as you move down the floor • Primary defender • Secondary defender • Know where they are, and where they might come from T L
Referee the DEFENSE • In the lead, move back off the ball • Know where primary defenders and secondary defenders are • Referee from the waist up • When drive comes from Trail position double whistles in the paint are good to have • Patient whistle • See what players can play through T L
Call the Obvious • If the whole gym knows it is a foul, it is a foul • If you partner passes or misses on a foul that the whole gym knows is a foul, you come and get that • No gotcha violations • Judgment is developed over time after seeing hundreds if not thousands of plays • Know when you missed a call, be the first to admit it, accept it, move on from it. T L
Communicate Effectively • Dress professionally • Be properly groomed • Don’t let your first impression be the wrong impression • Know your signals • Know your mechanics • Learn the rules • Know the rules • Use your voice • “Fake it until you make it!” T L

BFOA / Lunsford Update BFOA Member Lawsuit Attorney, and BFOA member Brad Lolus filed our complaint on Tuesday October 2nd in the 17th Judicial Circuit. BFOA member Robert Silver is the plaintiff. The complaint is two fold, it asks the court to decide: 1) If sports officials should be exempt from a level 2 background check as a result of the "line-of-sight" provision in the statute 2) If Broward county's fee structure for background checks is in compliance with the 30% cap outlined in the statute You can review the actual complaint in it's entirety: http://browardfootball.com/lunsford/complaint_final.pdf

There is recognition that physical contact was made by you when walking a student-athlete off the field. At this time, you are receiving an official reprimand for the incident. While our office does not believe the physical contact was at all harmful in nature or intent, it still should not have occurred. We thank you for replying to our requests.
