Sensory Language • Words and descriptions that appeal to one or more of the five senses—sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell • Example: The fire crackled and the smell of pine filled the air as I watched the sparks have trails of light.
Figurative Language • Words or phrases that describe one thing by comparing it to something else—similes and metaphors are two common figures of speech. • The snow fell like a whisper. • When he is embarrassed his face is a ripe tomato.
Precise Words • Specific words that make a description as clear and sharp as possible • Inexact words: He walked across the court to receive the trophy. • Precise words: The 6’4” basketball player strutted across the court to receive the MVP trophy.
Spatial Organization • Start at a certain point, and then move in a logical way around your subject. • From top to bottom • From near to far or far to near • From left to right or right to left • From inside to out or outside to in • Describe the landscape:
Mix it Up • You will be given a card with a picture of an object/place/person on it. • Write a paragraph describing your item without saying what your item is. Remember sensory language, figurative language, precise words, and spatial organization.
